Wapple Team in the Hot Seat: Lauren Thomas

Our people make Wapple rock! So each month we will feature one of our team members in the “Wapple Hot Seat”.

First up is Lauren Thomas who is one of our Wapple Designers.

How long have you worked for Wapple? Where did you work previously?

Since April 2011, so nearly two years! Before I was here, I worked at a bar and restaurant in the evenings, and at a school in the day.

Tell us about your day-to-day job. What does your job role involve?

Designing things, making things look nice! I make graphics, banners, adverts and mock-ups for customers mobile sites and also to support Wapple’s own activities, in particular Didlr*. I get to come to work and Didl every day!

(*Didlr is a subsidiary start-up company within the Wapple group – a social application for sharing digital doodles across all platforms.)

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

I would say deadlines, because I can be a bit of a perfectionist, I find myself getting hung up on small details. I think it’s quite difficult to accept something is finished so I can get on with the next project  – and there is always something else to be doing!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is seeing my work finished and published somewhere – when I come across a banner ad I have made, use a mobile site I have built, and seeing the characters in the Didlr app – watching some of my ideas come to life is really exciting for me.

Wapple is going through a strategy change- tell us some of your thoughts on it?

I think it is good that Wapple update their strategy because the way people use their mobiles is changing and the types of devices we use are changing – so it is only natural that Wapple changes too. I’m pleased because this gives me the opportunity to broaden my skills, and gives me experience in new areas of design.

What three words would your colleagues use to describe you?

A Feeder! Smiley. Curious.

Tell us something we don’t know about you…

My childhood dream job was to be an astronaut, until I saw the film Apollo 13. I think that a designer is a much safer career choice!

If you were CEO what would you do?

I would rent out an IHOP restaurant and have us all work from there. everyone could have pancakes for free, all day long!

What is/are your favourite:

Superhero? Batman! but only when he is played by Christian Bale.

Car? My own car of course – it’s a Volkswagen Scirocco. it is older than me, and I love it!

Holiday destination? I have not been to enough places to have a favourite – but I would really love to go to Egypt to see the pyramids.

Mobile App? Apart from the obvious – Didlr! I also love Instagram, and eBay.

Operating System? I find iOS easiest to use, but only because I am so used to it, so maybe that is my favourite! having said that, I nearly always use a windows phone to Didl! I think android is the only operating system that I actually dislike using.

Browser? I use both chrome and safari, depending on which computer I’m using. If I had to pick a favourite, I would choose chrome. only because the logo vaguely resembles a Pokéball.

Video game? Oh I haven’t played a video game for such a long time! I used to love my Sega Megadrive though. it would be a three-way tie between Sonic, Streets of Rage and Bomberman.

Who should we put in the hot seat next? THE WEAVE (Ed Weaver)
